| 内容記述 | In Japan, sweet potatoes were introduced to the Ryukyu Island in 1605 from China, and then spread to Kagoshima City, Tanegashima Island, and Yamagawa Town. They werewidely cultivated as a starvation relief crop from around 1700. A given name of sweet potatoes represents the place where sweet potatoes were introduced. The sweet potatoes which were introduced to Tanegashima Island were called Shiroimo, and those which were introduced to Kagoshima City and Yamagawa Town were called Akaimo. Sweet potatoes were introduced all over Japan and 300 different varieties were planted by the end of the Meiji period. Today sweet potatoes are not used only as human food but also as starch, industrial use or as stock feed (black pigs). Three hundred years have passed since sweet potatoes were introduced to Kagoshima. Although the role of sweet potatoes has changed with the times, sweet potatoes are an original part of the food culture of Kagoshima. | |||||
