Accounts of and reactions to the Richardson Affair and Great Britain’s 1863 bombardment of the city of Kagoshima in Southern Kyushu, are surprisingly conflicting. I will look at newspaper cuttings of the time, diary entries, and articles connected with the event, which in some instances, are written by people who witnessed things firsthand, and in others written long after.
